Kazakhstanis drive the most expensive taxi in the CIS

According to the results of the first quarter, 13.9 million passengers used taxi services in the Republic of Kazakhstan – 4.9% less than a year earlier.

Regionally, taxis carried the most passengers in Almaty (2.5 million people), Astana (1.5 million) and Karaganda region (1.1 million).

The least official taxi services were used in Zhetysu (277 thousand people), Atyrau (290.8 thousand) and Almaty (306.5 thousand) regions.

In nine out of 20 regions of the country, passenger traffic in the sector decreased compared to 2023. The largest decrease in the number of passengers was noted in the Atyrau region – only 290.8 thousand people compared to a noticeable 3.4 million a year earlier. One of the reasons for this reduction is the floods that occurred in the northern regions of the country.

According to official data, income from taxi transportation in the Republic of Kazakhstan reached 2 billion tenge compared to 1.4 billion a year earlier. The growth in value terms was 46.5%.

The highest income from taxi transportation was recorded in the Karaganda region – 790.4 million tenge compared to 567.9 million a year earlier. Next come Astana (558.3 million) and Almaty (297.9 million).

As for prices, at the end of March 2024, taxi fares increased by 0.6% per month and by 12.3% per year.

In monthly dynamics, price increases were noted only in Almaty and Astana – by 5 and 2%, respectively. In other regions prices remained at the same level.

In annual dynamics, the largest increase in prices was recorded in Almaty – by 40.6%. Next come Aktobe region (by 22.1%) and Shymkent (by 16.9%). The smallest annual price increase was noted in the Mangistau region – by 1.2%. In the East and West Kazakhstan regions, prices remained at last year’s level.

As of April 16, in Kazakhstan, according to Numbeo, the cost of a taxi trip averaged $0.67 per kilometer, for which the country was ranked 73rd most expensive out of 95. This is the highest price among the CIS countries participating in the rating.

For comparison: the tariff in Azerbaijan was 0.59 US dollars per kilometer, in Russia – 0.32, in Belarus – 0.31, in Armenia, Ukraine and Uzbekistan – 0.3 each.

The highest rates were recorded in Switzerland ($4.39 per kilometer), Kuwait (3.25) and Jamaica (3.23), while the lowest was in the Philippines (just 0.25).
